Softball splits two games in second day of Tiger Classic

Game One Box Score  -  Game Two Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– In day two of the Tiger Classic, the University of Evansville softball team split a pair of games, falling to UL Monroe in the opener before posting a 3-2 victory over Butler in the nightcap.

The second game saw the Purple Aces, who stand at 7-2 overall, score two runs in the 7th inning after trailing by a 2-1 margin entering the frame.  Tess Hupe posted a perfect 3-3 game to lead the Aces to the win.

"I want to say how proud I am of the way our ladies responded tonight," head coach Mat Mundell said.  "I asked them to do one thing that second game – just battle – and they did it.  It was a great team win!"

In the first game, Louisiana Monroe picked up a 15-0 win over the Purple Aces in first game of the night.  The Warhawks posted their 15 runs on 12 hits as Amye Barre and Faith Bohack registered four RBIs apiece.  The Aces posted just one hit as Tess Hupe went 1-for-2 on the day.

Butler jumped on the board first in the second game, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first.  Evansville tied it up in the top of the third, utilizing some speed on the base path.  With one out, Tess Hupe singled to short and went on to steal second.  With two outs, Chandra Parr came through with the game-tying his as her single brought Hupe home.

Responding with a rally of its own, Butler went back in front in the bottom half of the third.  Alyssa Lach came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out and responded with a single to center.  The Aces did an excellent job of limiting the Butler offense in the inning as Morgan Florey struck out the final three batters to hold the Bulldogs to just one run.

The score remained that way until the top of the seventh when the Aces offense scored a pair of runs with two outs to go back in front.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Luckett singled to center to bring in the tying run.  Following a pitching change for the Bulldogs, Courtney Land scored what would be the winning run on a passed ball.  Morgan Florey pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Aces, picking up her third win of the year.  She struck out 8 batters in her appearance.

Sunday's final day will see the Aces take on Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m.
