NORMAL, Ill. – A day after a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, Chandra Parr was 3-4 with a pair of home runs to lead the University of Evansville softball team to a 7-4 win at Illinois State on Sunday afternoon at Marian Kneer Stadium.
With the win, the Purple Aces (18-20, 6-9 MVC) clinched their second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series win after splitting Saturday's doubleheader against the Redbirds (13-26, 5-8 MVC).
"This team just continues to amaze me with their fight and will to win," Aces head coach Mat Mundell said. "We made some great adjustments in pregame and they really paid off for is with some huge hits. This team is fun to watch!"
Parr and Morgan Lambert each had three hits on the day. Lambert hit a solo home run of her own, her third of the season. Morgan Florey once again did it all for UE. She went the distance in the circle, striking out seven batters en route to her 11
th win over the year. At the plate, she was 1-1 with a home run, three walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.
After a scoreless two innings, Evansville was first on the board in the top of the third. A 1-out single by Parr brought Florey to the plate, who homered to left giving the Aces a 2-0 lead.
Illinois State got the two runs back and plated two more in the third to take a 4-2 lead. A Riley Strandgard 2-run homer capped off the four run inning. Evansville made its move in the top of the fifth as Parr lead the frame off with a solo shot to right. One out later, Lambert did the same as her homer to center tied it up at 4-4.
Florey clamped down at that point, giving up just one ISU hit over the final four frames. Her work paid off as the offense was able to take the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Another leadoff home run for Parr gave UE a 5-4 lead before RBI singles from Michal Luckett and Susan Norris gave the Aces some insurance. In the bottom of the seventh, Florey sat the Redbirds down in order to seal the win.
Evansville remains on the road as they travel to Carbondale, Ill. for a Wednesday doubleheader at Southern Illinois. Next weekend, the Aces are in Terre Haute for a 3-game set at Indiana State.
