EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Timely hitting saw Missouri State earn a pair of victories over the University of Evansville softball team on Friday evening at Cooper Stadium.
The Bears (19-27, 8-12 MVC) took a 1-0 win to open the day before rallying to defeat the Purple Aces (22-23, 10-12 MVC) by a final of 4-2 in game two.
Following the second game, two Aces were honored as part of Senior Day festivities. Amanda Blankenship transferred to UE for the 2015 season and has helped the pitching staff cut its ERA in half in 2016. While she is not a senior, Danielle Freeman completes her softball career this season and is set to return to the UE swimming squad this fall.
Missouri State scored the opening run on a unique hit in the top of the third in game one. With Olivia Roark standing on second, Madison Jones hit a ball up the middle that was deflected by Morgan Florey. Jones reached on a single while Roark scored on a close play at the plate. The Aces avoided further damage as Courtney Land threw a dart from center to get another MSU runner out at the plate to complete the inning.
In the fifth, the Bears threatened in a big way, loading up the bases with one out, but Florey was able to pitch herself out of the jam. Land came up huge once again in the 7
th inning. The Bears put the first two on with no outs before a 1-out fly ball came her way. She threw another perfect throw to Hayli Scott at the plate to give the Aces a chance, but MSU was able to hang on for the win.
Kaitlin Beason went the distance for the Bears, giving up five hits. Florey took the loss for UE allowing a run on eight hits.
Morgan Florey got the offense going in the bottom of the third in game two. After Courtney Land singled, Florey hit a homer to deep left to put the Aces on the board at 2-0. Missouri State came right back with four runs in the top of the 4
th. Erika Zimmer had the big hit, bringing two runners home on a 2-out double to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
That was all they needed as they were able to hold the Aces offense at bay to take the win. Erin Struemph threw the complete game, giving up two runs on five hits. Amanda Blankenship took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings. Just one of those runs was earned. Emily Lockhart went the final three frames, allowing just one hit.
The final game of the series is set for Saturday at 12 p.m. inside Cooper Stadium.
