CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A 46
th-minute minute strike was the difference on Sunday afternoon as the University of Evansville women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to host Illinois at Illinois Soccer Stadium.
The Illini (3-5-0) enjoyed the majority of opportunities in the contest, especially in the second half as Summer Schaefer finished off a build-up through Patricia George and Alia Abu-Douleh just 37 seconds after the break to take the lead.
The Aces (1-5-1) saw their best chances come in the first half as both Maggie Leazer and Bronwyn Boswell forced saves from goalkeeper Michelle Denley, but it would go a little differently in the second period, with the hosts out-shooting UE 12-2.
Whitney Biggs played all 90 minutes in goal for UE, recording three saves in the process.
The Aces will return to action on Tuesday with a trip to UT Martin, which marks the first of three matches in a six-day span for the program, as the team will follow up with IUPUI and Butler next weekend.
NOTES: UE is 1-4-0 against Illinois, and Sunday marked the first meeting with the Illini since the 2004 campaign … The two sides squared off in all but one season from 2000-2004, with UE taking home a 2-0 decision on Sept. 30, 2001 … The Aces are 26-26-8 all-time against Illinois schools.
