Miller's 18-point performance pushes Aces past Governors

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Buoyed by 18 points from senior Marley Miller, the University of Evansville women's team used a strong defensive effort late to push past Austin Peay, 56-52, on Tuesday evening inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Leading the Aces, Miller finished just two points shy of tying her career-high with 18 points, hitting four three-pointers and recording five rebounds. Fellow senior Brooke Bishop joined Miller in double-figures with 10 points, nine of which were scored in the first half. The Governors were powered by 15 points from Myah Leflore while Keisha Gregory also finished in double-digits with 12 points.

Austin Peay built an early advantage, taking a 7-2 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter, but Evansville would push back before the end of the frame. Manufacturing a 13-7 run, the Aces earned a 15-14 lead after the opening period. Evansville continued to add to its lead, eventually building a 32-24 advantage at the break.

The third quarter started much like the second quarter ended, as the Aces scored four-straight points out of the break to take their largest lead of the game at 36-24. Responding quickly, the Governors went on a 14-3 run to get within one with 5:42 left in the third period. Following a jumper by Austin Peay that gave the Governors a 42-40 lead, Evansville mounted a 5-0 run to take three-point lead. Myah Leflore drew the sides even again on a triple with 1:12 remaining in the quarter, but freshman Anna Newman hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Aces a 47-45 lead after the third.

Pushing back in front, the Governors garnered a three-point lead at 52-49 with 6:49 left on the clock, but Evansville's defense proved to be the key down the stretch. The Aces held Austin Peay scoreless over the final 6:49 of the game while going on a 7-0 run to capture the 56-52 victory.

In the game, Evansville shot 48.9% (22-45) from the field and 46.7% from beyond the arc (7-15) while limiting Austin Peay to just 33.3% from the field and 25% from three.

Evansville is back on the road for its final contest of 2018 as the Aces take on Wisconsin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night in Madison, Wis..
