IOWA CITY, Iowa – The MVC Swimming and Diving Championship continued today with day 3 of competition.
The Aces remain in 7
th place, with Missouri State still in the lead.
"I'm glad the girls came out tonight and had fun," said head coach Rickey Perkins. "It was good to see them fight, to see them stand up when they were knocked down, to see their spirit tonight. Especially Courtney, who had a rough morning but came back tonight, nailing it hard."
The first event of the night was the 100 butterfly. Senior Danielle Freeman took 6
th place with a final time of 55.36, breaking Kristen Myer's record of 55.47 set last year. Myers and freshman Kara Steward participated in the consolation final, earning 11
th and 13
th places at 56.43 and 57.63 respectively. Senior Kasey Rein took 20
th place with a final time of 57.79.
Sophomore Ashton Adams represented the Aces tonight in the 400 IM. She clocked in a career best time of 4:43.72 to place 18
th.
"Ashton was very unhappy with her swim this morning, but then coming back tonight and going a best time—that's fighting," Perkins said of Adams.
Sophomore Kristy Kupfer also earned a best time, this time in the 200 freestyle. Her final time of 1:55.14 was good for 18
th place.
Sophomore Alaina Sylvester and junior Amy Smith competed in the 100 breaststroke C Final. Sylvester took 20
th place with 1:06.11 while Smith earned 23
rd at 1:08.12. In the morning preliminary, junior Kaylee Gubricky clocked in a career best 1:09.02.
Junior Sam Gowdy took the win in the 100 backstroke consolation final. Her time of 56.88 landed her in 9
th place overall.
The 400 Medley Relay took place tonight as well. Gowdy, Sylvester, Steward, and
Freeman clocked in a 3:53.33 for 7
th place. In Evansville's C Relay, freshman Danielle Baugh's backstroke split of 1:03.09 was a career best.
Courtney Coverdale completed her diving career tonight in the consolation final of the 3-Meter. The senior won the round handily, scoring 246.21 points to take 9
th place overall.
Tomorrow morning's preliminary session will begin at 11 a.m. Central Time, consisting of the 100 freestyle, the 200s of the strokes, and the 1650 freestyle.
