Men's Soccer drops season-opener at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah - In its season opener, the University of Evansville men's soccer team fell to Utah Valley, 4-0, on Friday night in Orem, Utah.

"Its not the result we were looking for," said Aces head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "We lacked a bit of maturity. We played some decent soccer at times, but we give UVU credit they capitalized on our mistakes and put us under pressure and mentally we weren't strong enough. We are going to have to take a look at some things and have a serious talk tomorrow and start preparing ourselves for UNLV on Sunday."

Evansville got the action started in the seventh minute as freshman Adam Snow put the first shot on-goal in the match which was saved by Utah Valley's goalkeeper Joseph Wheelwright. The Wolverines opened the scoring in the match in the 10th minute as Zach Maas recovered a rebounded shot and scored for UVU.

As the clock ticked past the midway point of the first half, the Purple Aces began to find their rhythm, but were unable to find the equalizer in the latter portions of the opening 45 minutes.

Early in the second half, Utah Valley added a second goal as the Wolverines scored in the 53rd minute. In the 25 minutes that followed UVU's second goal, the Aces were able to maintain the margin and put a shot on-goal as junior Jesse Stafford-Lacey sent a shot on frame that was saved by the Wolverines.

As the match rolled into its final 11 minutes, UVU scored its third and fourth goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes as the hosts grabbed the 4-0 win.

Stafford-Lacey led the Aces with a pair of shots with one on-goal, while sophomores Adam Snow and Filip Johansson each had a shot on-goal.

In the match, UVU edged UE in corner kicks, 4-3, while the Wolverines held a 14-8 advantage on shots.

The Aces are back in action on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Orem, Utah when Evansville takes on UNLV.
