UE Indoor Men's and Women's Indoor Track shine at Mastodon Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After more than a month-long holiday hiatus, the University of Evansville men's and women's indoor track and field teams put in an impressive showing at the Mastodon Invitational at the University of Fort Wayne, Saturday.

"We looked really good today," said University of Evansville and women's track and field head coach Don Walters. "I'm pleased with the performance of my squad, especially coming off the holiday break."

The Aces delivered a myriad of first place finishes. On the men's side, junior Stanley Chepchieng bested the field in the triple jump with a leap of 13.60 meters, setting a new school record in the process. Chepchieng also was part of the team that took first in the men's 4 X 400 meter relay, along with sophomore Ian Alberts, graduate athlete Everett Plocek and freshman Peter Blok with a time of 3:35.52. Alberts set a new Aces program mark in earning the top prize in the pole vault with a successful attempt of 4.41 meters. Freshman Alan Kerstiens leaped to the crown in the long jump, with a leap of 6.29 meters. 

Chepchieng's first place finish in triple jump was his second event title this indoor season, winning the event at the UIndy Opener. Kerstiens and Nick Ryan, who turned in a 6.12 meter performance, as the teammates swapped spots from the first event of the season, which Ryan won. The first place finish by the men's 4X400 relay team is the first meet relay title by the Aces since the program made its return to competition in 2018.

On the women's side, freshman Erin Nixon took the top spot in the high jump, while setting a new school record with an attempt 1.52 meters. Another newcomer, McKenna Sapp soared to the title in the women's pole vault, setting a new program mark in the process with a mark of 3.34 meters, as well.

Several other program records were also broken by the Aces. Sophomore sprinter Monica Watkins shattered the Women's 200 meter mark with a time of 26.24. Sophomore distance runner Anna Lowry broke the Women's 3000 meter record with a time of 10:39.60. Freshman Taiza Alexander set a new mark in the long jump with a leap of 4.95 meters. In the throwing events, Sophomore Brittany Corley smashed the school record in the weight throw 10.51 meter. In men's competition, Brendon Smith set a new UE mark in the 200 meter with a time of 24.11.

In the team competition, the UE men finished third behind first place Detroit Mercy and Wabash, while the women finished fifth, with Northern Kentucky taking top honors.

The University of Evansville men's and women's indoor track teams are back in action when they compete in the Don Denoon Invitational at Southern Illinois University on February 1st and 2nd.
