Aces Indoor Track and Field turns in solid showings at last tune-up before MVC's

CHARLESTON, Ill. - With the Missouri Valley Conference Championships one week away, the University of Evansville men's and women's indoor track and field teams continued their trend of shattering school records in their final tune-up at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special in Charleston, Ill. Friday night.

In the men's competition, junior Stanley Chepchieng continued his dominance this season, winning his third triple jump event, surpassing the 14 meter mark for the first time this year. Freshman Michael Boots broke Ryan Freeman's program record in weight throw, with a toss of 12.79 Meters. Boots' throw was an improvement of over 3 feet from his previous best. Boots was also the top UE finisher in the shot put competition, with a toss of 12.68 meters, good enough to place 13th. In the men's 400 meter, Brendon Smith broke the school mark with a time of 54.43, placing him fourth, just ahead of teammate Peter Blok and Everett Plocek.   

On the women's side, sophomore runner Anna Lowry shattered her own school record in the mile by nearly 17 seconds, with a time of 5:10:90, earning her a third place finish. Women's short sprints also had a strong night, with Nikki Hutchcraft shattering her personal and program record in the 60 meter dash, while Monica Watkins lowered her program record in the 200 meter. Freshman Taiza Alexander broke her own program mark in the long jump with a leap of 5.03 meters, earning her a tenth place finish. The most impressive improvement came from Brittany Corley, who shattered her own program record in weight throw with a toss of 11.78 meters, four feet farther than she had thrown earlier this season.

Other strong performances included Kaleb Slagle taking first place in the men's 1000 meter run, Tucker Dawson's third place finish in the men's 600 meter run and Ian Alberts 4th place performance in the men's pole vault. In the women's competition, Emma Boebringer took second in the 1000 meter run.

Up next for the Aces indoor track teams is a trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa and the Missouri Valley Conference Championships at the University of Northern Iowa next weekend February 23-24.
