CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - It was a day of challenges for the University of Evansville men's and women's track and field teams in the first day of competition at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa Saturday.
Day 1 Results
While the MVC's top teams ran away from the pack in the opening heats, a few Aces stood out in the competition. In the men's 35 lb. weight throw, freshman Michael Boots edged out his senior teammate, Ryan Freeman for sixth place in the first flight, with a distance of 12.84 meters, breaking the school mark he set last week at the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special. Freeman took seventh in the flight, with a distance of 12.80 meters. In the men's long jump competition, newcomer Nick Ryan soared to a sixth place finish, with a season-best leap of 6.59 meters, which broke the school indoor record of 6.55 meters, set back in 1976 by Keith Blair. Freshman Greg King broke the school record in the men's 200 meter, with a time of 23.39. In the men's 400 meter, Brendon Smith broke the school record he set last week, with a with a time of time of 53.85, just edging out freshman teammate Peter Blok for the honor.
On the women's side, sophomore Anna Lowry just missed out on qualifying in the mile preliminary race, but shattered her school record, set just last week with a time of 5:10.12. Monica Watkins shattered the school record in the 200 meter, which she set last week, with a time of 26.95.
The Missouri Valley Conference Championships continue tomorrow in Cedar Falls, on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.Â
