Evansville improves on third day of MVC Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Back in the pool for the third day of competition, the University of Evansville women's swimming and diving team continued to impress at the 2019 MVC Championships in Columbia, Mo.

" With one more day, we are sitting just 3.5 points behind UALR. They beat UE by 138.5 last year," said Aces' women's swimming and diving head coach Brent Noble. "The group is fun to coach, and they're very much having a team meet. This is the reward at the end of a long and tough season of training, and they are enjoying while swimming fast. Kristen Myers has been the top scorer so far with two championship finals swims. She missed the school record in the 100 fly tonight by .07. Kristen, Kaylee Gubricky, and Ashton Adams have all had performances that made the UE all-time top-10 record book."

Evansville sits in seventh-place as a team with 179 points, just 3.5 points behind sixth-place Little Rock, while increasing its lead over eight-place Valparaiso.

Beginning the day with one of the best finishes of the meet, senior Kristen Myers earned a spot in the A final of the 100 yard butterfly. Myers swam to a fourth-place finish in a time of 55.41, just seven-hundredths of a second off the school record, earning 15 valuable points for the Aces. In the B final,sophomore  Kara Steward finished 11th in a time of 56.87, while junior Emma Hennessy clocked a 59.33 for a 23rd-place finish.

Competing in the consolation finals of the 400 yard IM, junior Ashton Adams scored a 16th-place finish in the B final with a time of 4:43.37 and freshman Nicolette Wickes (4:54.53) and junior Shaina Weisberg (4:56.44) finished in 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

In the 200 yard freestyle, junior Kristy Kupfer swam to a 15th-place finish in a time of 1:54.95 in the B final. The 100 yard breastroke saw three more Aces compete in consolation finals as junior Alaina Sylvester (1:07.19) and senior Kaylee Gubricky (1:07.21) finished just two-hundredths of a second apart in 14th and 15th-place, respectively and senior Amy Smith finished in 18th in the C final with a time of 1:07.73.

Finishing in 10th in the B final of the 100 yard backstroke, senior Samantha Gowdy recorded a time of 56.81, while Kupfer scored a 24th-place finish in a time of 59.49 in the C final.

The day came to a close with the 400 yard medley relay. Evansville secured a sixth-place finish in the relay with a time of 3:53.50, earning 26 points for the Aces with the finish.

Saturday marks the final day of competition with five preliminary events and seven final events, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Columbia, Mo.
