EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After both finishing in the top four last weekend, the University of Evansville men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continue the early portions of their outdoor season at the Bill Cornell Classic in Carbondale, Ill.
Evansville's men's team recorded its first team victory since 1980, finishing with 207 points at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., 20 points ahead of host Butler. The Aces' women's team earned a fourth-place finish last weekend at the Stan Lyons Invitational in the opening meet of the outdoor season.
In the win, the Aces saw success both on the track and in the field. One of the strongest events of the invitational for the Aces came in the men's shot put. Evansville swept the top three positions as Michael Boots, Andrew Schuler, and Ryan Freeman led the way for the Aces as Boots captured the win in the shot put with a throw of 13.00 meters.
Trey Riggs put together one of the most impressive individual performances in the invitational. Riggs scored 28 points for the Aces on his own, including a pair of first-place finishes. In the 110 meter hurdles, Riggs earned the win with a time of 15.93. Following up his victory, Riggs secured his second individual victory in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.10. Riggs narrowly missed his third win of the day with a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.75 meters.
On the women's side, Evansville broke program records and competed well in the meet. Taiza Alexander secured a win for the Aces in the long jump. Alexander captured the individual victory with a distance of 4.72 meters, breaking Evansville's program record by .83 meters.
Anna Lowry continued her strong sophomore campaign with a fourth-place finish in the 1500 meters. Breaking her own program, Lowry improved on her mark by more than two seconds, finishing in a time of 4:55.05.
The first action at the Classic begins with four field events on Friday followed by 34 events in the field and on the track on Saturday.
