Evansville sees success at Bill Cornell Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. - In it's second-straight weekend of competition, the University of Evansville men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Bill Cornell Classic on Friday and Saturday in Carbondale, Ill.

The highlight of the the meet for Evansville came in the women's 5,000 meters. Running consistently throughout the race, sophomore Anna Lowry saved her fastest lap for the last lap as Lowry ran to the win in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:47.65, breaking the program record set in 2006, including a final lap time of 1:22.05.

Opening the classic, freshman Michael Boots set a new program record in the men's discus competition. Boots finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 45.20 meters.

Also excelling in a field event, freshman Nick Ryan captured a top 10 finish in the men's long jump. Finishing in ninth, Ryan recorded a jump of 6.45 meters to lead Evansville in the event. 

In the men's pole vault, the Aces were paced by Ian Alberts. Earning a fourth-place finish, Alberts cleared a height of 4.70 meters, matching the mark of the third-place finisher, and breaking an Aces' program record that was originally set in 1971.

Evansville's women impressed in the 4x100 meter relay, finishing second and defeating an MVC foe. Finishing in a program-record time of 50.11, the group of Monica Watkins, McKenna Sapp, Skylar Tucker, and Taiza Alexander earned second-place with a .55 second advantage over third-place Bradley.

In a 36-runner field in the men's 800 meters, sophomore Stanley Chepchieng shined for the Aces. Chepchieng finished in ninth, recording a time of 1:56.51 in the event.

Narrowly missing a top 10 finish, Monica Watkins performed well in the women's 200 meters. In the race, Watkins finished 11th with a time of 27:19.

The Aces are back in competition on April 5 at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational in Owensboro, Ky.
