EVANSVILLE, Ind.— Reigning first-team all-Southeastern Conference forward Raegan Kelley recorded a goal and an assist on Thursday night to power the visiting Vanderbilt University Commodores to a 3-0 victory over the University of Evansville women's soccer team at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.
Â
After the two sides battled back and forth for the first 30 minutes, Kelley set up teammate Rachel Deresky for an opportunity on the right side, which she slipped past a diving UE goalkeeper Myia Danek for the match's first goal of the contest.
Â
Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead to the halftime locker room, before striking just minutes into the second half, as reserve Caroline Betts found the lower-left 90 from 18 yards out on the left side to take a 2-0 lead. Kelley then headed home a loose ball in the box in the 63
rd minute to provide the final margin of victory for Vanderbilt.
Â
"We knew coming in that Vanderbilt was a very good team, and I thought that they showed it tonight," said UE head coach Chris Pfau. "I was actually pleased with the growth that I saw in our team from our exhibition match against SLU to tonight. I thought we played a lot more composed, especially in the midfield, and did a lot of things well tonight.
Â
"The speed of the opponent these first two matches has been higher than we will likely see the rest of the year. Hopefully, the game will begin to slow down a little, especially for some of our younger players, and we can start to show what this team is capable of."
Â
Evansville will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when UE hosts Austin Peay State at McCutchan Stadium. Austin Peay tied Miami (OH), 0-0, this afternoon in its season-opener in Ohio.
