EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville senior forward Emily Ormson netted UE's first goal of the season in the 81st minute on Sunday to help the Purple Aces pick up their first point of the year with a 1-1 tie with visiting Austin Peay at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville.
Ormson was on the other end of a beautiful cross from sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Anslinger to head in a ball from the top of the six-yard box to give UE a 1-0 lead. Austin Peay's Anna McPhie would counter four minutes later with an equalizer from just outside of the six-yard box to the lower-right corner to knot the match at 1-1.
"Overall, I saw a lot of positives today," said UE head coach Chris Pfau. "Today's match was tough, because I think that we were mentally drained from getting up Thursday night to play Vanderbilt, and combine the short time in-between matches with the heat today, and I am pleased to be able to get a result.
"I felt like the way we played the first ten minutes of the second half, as well as other points in the second half, was very encouraging. That is the team that we want to be all season long. It's just a case now where we have to work on getting to that level and be able to maintain it for extended periods of time, and that will be what we work on in training, beginning this week."
In a very defensive first half, UE nearly scored first in the 27th minute, as Ormson was denied from 18 yards out by a leaping save from APSU goalkeeper Chloe Dion. The Governors then nearly answered back four minutes later, but an apparent goal was called back due to offsides.
In the second half, both teams opened up offensively, and UE had two strong chances turned away by Dion. In the 55th minute, Anslinger put a strong header towards goal from above the penalty spot, but Dion punched it away. Then, in the 70th minute, Dion denied UE freshman Chrysta Vasquez on a breakaway attempt.
Ormson and Anslinger both fired two shots each to lead UE offensively. UE junior goalkeeper Myia Danek made two saves in 90 minutes of action, while Dion recorded four saves for the Governors.
Evansville (0-1-1) will now get a week off to train and begin school before hosting Morehead State next Sunday at 2 p.m. at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
