Seddon’s Big Game Not Enough in Loss to Cincinnati

CINCINNATI –  The University of Evansville baseball team saw a breakout performance from sophomore outfielder Ryan Seddon (Joilet, Ill./St. Laurence) on Tuesday afternoon, who finished a single shy of the cycle in his first career start, but was unable to hang onto a late lead as the Aces fell to Cincinnati,13-11.

Seddon went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and a home run, driving in three runs and scoring two in his first career start. His 2-RBI double in the second inning marked the first hit of his career. Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) went 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) drove in a pair to help the Aces set a new season-best with 12 hits and tie their highest scoring mark of the season at 11.

Adam Buczkowski got the win for Cincinnati in relief, while Joel Pineiro got the save. RJ James (Toronto, Ontario/Sir John A MacDonald) took the loss for the Aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati jumped out in front in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run, but Evansville responded in the second. Following a pair of singles by Ximi Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris) and Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista), Trenton Lombardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./La Salle) delivered another single to drive in Baftiri. With two outs in the inning, Seddon stepped in for his first at-bat of the day and smacked a double just out of the reach of the Bearcats' right fielder to drive in two and give the Aces a 3-2 lead.

Drue Young (Greenwood, Ind./Ball State) took over on the mound for the Aces in the second and worked two scoreless innings, striking out three. However, with Young out of the game in the fourth, the Bearcats retook the lead on a two-run home run.

The Aces would answer again on offense, striking for three runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead. Seddon began the inning with his first career home run, and was followed by an RBI single by Wyatt Pennington (Avon, Ind./Avon) and a Bearcats error to score another run.

Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich.) kept it a 6-4 game in the bottom half of the inning, working around a pair of base runners to put up a zero.

The Aces remained hot offensively in the sixth, with Seddon starting the inning with a triple and coming around to score on a single by Longmeier. After a HBP and a pitching change, Haire drove in two more with a single before McConnell drove in two with a triple to right center, making it a 4-run inning and an 11-4 advantage for Evansville.

Cincinnati began their comeback in the bottom of the seventh, striking for a three-run home run to cut their deficit to four. The Bearcats delivered the big blow in the eighth, striking for six runs on six hits, taking a 13-11 lead and holding on in the top of the ninth for a 13-11 win.
