Aces Finish Mayor's Cup in Scoreless Draw

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against crosstown rival Southern Indiana on Tuesday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium in the fifth annual Mayor's Cup.

Evansville created plenty of opportunities throughout the match, outshooting Southern Indiana, 19-4, while holding a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Aces also earned nine corner kicks compared to two for the Screaming Eagles.

The Aces recorded seven shots in the opening 30 minutes of play, while Southern Indiana registered three of its four shots during that span. Evansville continued to control play late in the half, adding two more shots to take a 9-3 advantage in shots into halftime.

Neither team recorded a shot in the opening 12 minutes of the second half, with Southern Indiana recording its first attempt of the half in the 58th minute. Evansville quickly responded with a quality opportunity from Devin Shepherd in the 59th minute, but the attempt in front of the goal was blocked by a Southern Indiana defender.

Shepherd created another opportunity moments later off a corner kick, sending a header just wide of the left post.

One of Evansville's best scoring chances came in the 70th minute when Pablo Calvete sent a shot toward the top of the net, but the Southern Indiana goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the attempt and deflect it away.

The Aces continued to pressure throughout the final 20 minutes, holding Southern Indiana without a shot while recording seven of their own during the closing stretch. Evansville was unable to find the back of the net, ending the match in a scoreless draw.

With the result, Evansville moves to 1-4-2 on the season. The Aces return to action on Monday, Sept. 21, traveling to Washington, D.C. to take on No. 9 Georgetown.
