Soccer Team Rolls Into Omaha With 6 Straight Victories

The year 1996 seems to be coming up a lot recently in regard to the University of Evansville men's soccer team.

The 7-2-0 Purple Aces are riding a six-match win streak, their longest since the 1996 team won seven consecutive games. The 1996 season was also the last time Evansville won at Creighton University, and that's where the Aces will be looking for another win Saturday night. The match between the Aces and Bluejays at Morrison Stadium begins at 6:00.

Evansville opened Missouri Valley Conference play Wednesday with goals from Jarrett Robbins and Tad Kreamaleyer, and stellar defensive play from central defender Justin Sass and goalkeeper Phil Boerger, that led the Aces to a 2-0 victory at Eastern Illinois. The 7-2 start is the best at this stage of the season since--you guessed it--1996, when UE started off 11-2 on its way to an 18-5-0 record, MVC Tournament championship, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Creighton is 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league following a 1-0 loss at home to Missouri State on Sept. 19 and a 1-0 win over Bradley at home Wednesday. The Bluejays were ranked among the nation's top 10 in most pre-season polls, but are now in the 'also receiving votes' category along with the Aces and Drake. Evansville received 13 votes in the adidas/NSCAA national poll and 12 votes in the Soccer Times poll Tuesday. Evansville also cracked the top 10 in this week's NSCAA Midwest Region rankings, now tied for ninth.
