Senior Day is Saturday for the University of Evansville men's soccer team when the Aces host Bradley at 4:30, and
Sam Bornstein,
Reggie Edu,
Dan Gibson,
Ally Mackay and
Kieran Purcell can take a bow for what they’ve done to elevate the program.
The five represent the first full recruiting class that fourth-year coach Mike Jacobs and his staff brought to UE, and will leave as the most successful in recent history. They are the first UE class since 1992 to produce four consecutive winning seasons, and their 38 victories are the most for a UE senior class since 1999. They've won two ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic titles (2008, 2009), as well as tournament championships at Missouri State (2006) and Bradley (2009). The have also finished in the top four in the Missouri Valley Conference regular season standings each year, and have qualified for the State Farm MVC Tournament each year.
"This senior class has been a major part of our rebuilding process here," Coach Jacobs said. "Their contributions and leadership, both on and off the field, have been vital in getting us to where we are today. I know that each of them will be able to come back here 10 years from now, and know that they were a major part of the foundation of rebuilding Aces Soccer."
A victory for Evansville (10-7-1, 4-4-1) Saturday over Bradley (6-10-1, 1-8-0) gives the Aces their highest win total since the 1996 team produced an 18-5-0 record, an MVC Tournament championship, and the school’s most recent trip to the NCAA Tournament. It also means the Aces could finish as high as third in the MVC regular season standings. Saturday's matches end the regular season, and the four-team State Farm MVC Tournament at Des Moines, Iowa begins next Friday. Missouri State has already clinched the regular season championship. Drake and Creighton play each other at Des Moines Saturday to decide second place. The Aces can finish ahead of Creighton in third place with a victory Saturday along with a Drake victory over Creighton.
