NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Falling behind, 1-0, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team rallied to score four unanswered goals by four different UE players, as the Purple Aces topped Belmont University, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Rose Park. With the victory, Evansville now owns a 5-3 record.

“It was a total team effort,” said head coach Mike Jacobs. “We came out a little flat, but after conceding the first goal, our group showed a lot of resiliency to claw back and get the result.”

Eric Teppen was huge in goal for us. His PK save when were up 2-1 was the difference in the match, and gave us the momentum to tack on two more,” added Jacobs. “Belmont’s a good team and this win on the road is really good for us going forward into conference play.

Just under five and a half minutes into the contest, the Bruins took a quick 1-0 lead on Will Moorad’s goal on the left side. However, that would be the last time Belmont would find the net, as Evansville took control and set the offensive tone for the remainder of the match.

Junior Jesse Sharp tallied the first goal for the Aces in the 16th minute, receiving a pass from freshman Drew Schall just over midfield and then shot from 16 yards out. The goal marked Sharp’s fourth of the season.

In the 41st minute, freshman Dylan Terry took the corner kick for Evansville. Sophomore Alex Kapsalis got a head on it and senior Jarrett Robbins flicked it past goalkeeper Lou Manning for his second goal of the year, giving UE a 2-1 lead.

With 46:33 on the clock, the Bruins were awarded a penalty kick for a chance to tie it back up, but Teppen made the remarkable save to shift the match’s momentum in favor of the Aces the rest of the way.

Evansville followed with two more goals. Freshman Zach Byrd scored the first in the 56th minute, rebounding a shot by senior Aaron Henkle that went off the post. Freshman Ryan Stallings capped the match with a goal in the 61st minute, beating the keeper, one-on-one, after a long pass from classmate Luis Romero.

In the hard-fought and physical match, there were six yellow cards distributed evenly. The Aces held the advantage in shots, 17-11 and 9-6 on goal. Sharp led UE with four shots, including two on goal, while Terry (3), Romero (2), and Byrd (2) also recorded multiple shots.

Teppen tallied five saves in 74:51 minutes. Junior Robert Randant held the Bruins scoreless in the last 15:09 of the match.

The Aces take a two-week hiatus from competition, returning to action Saturday, Oct. 8, to face Missouri Valley Conference foe SIU Edwardsville on the road. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. CT.
