EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Led by senior starter
Kyle Lloyd, who tossed four shutout innings, and solid relief pitching by sophomore
James Kohler and senior
Josh Biggs, Team Purple captured Game 1 of the University of Evansville baseball team’s annual Fall Word Series with a 1-0 win over Team Black Monday at Braun Stadium.
The first four innings were a pitcher’s duel between Lloyd, who earned the win on the mound, and Team Black starter redshirt junior
Sam Johns, who scattered three hits.
Johnny Day’s one-out triple in the bottom of the fourth provided Team Purple with its first scoring opportunity, but Johns held them at bay, inducing a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.
Team Purple scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Kyle Schwinghammer started the frame with a single off of Team Black junior reliever
Tyler Miller and advanced to second base on an infield error. Schwinghammer later scored on a one out-single off the bat of freshman Jonathon Ramon. Miller rebounded by striking out four of the ballgame’s final six hitters, but was saddled with the tough-luck loss.
Team Black made things interesting in the seventh, as redshirt sophomore
Kevin Kaczmarski drew a walk and stole second base to put himself in scoring position. However, Biggs got out of the jam by retiring the next three hitters to strand Kaczmarski and earn the save.
The Purple Aces will continue their Fall World Series Tuesday afternoon, as Game 2 is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
