HOOVER, Ala. – Senior
Griffin Wood finished in a tie for 7
th place overall to lead the University of Evansville men’s golf team to a 12
th place finish in the Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
After shooting a 75 in round one, Wood carded a 1-under 71 before tallying a 74 to finish with a 220 over three rounds. Fellow senior
Michael Sainz was the next Ace on the leaderboard, notching a three-round total of 235 to earn a tie for 53
rd.
Three shots behind Sainz was
Quinn Vilneff, who finished with a 238. The sophomore shot a 1-under 71 in the second round, tying Wood for the lowest round for Evansville.
Andrew Luo notched a 239 while
Parker Hensley recorded a 241. Shooting on his own,
Sam Cobb finished with a 256 after carding an 80 in the third and final round.
Host school Samford swept both the team and individual championships. As a team, Samford notched an 882, finishing nine strokes ahead of Austin Peay and Davidson, who tied for second. Casey O'Toole was the individual winner, finishing with a 211 on the strength of a 6-under 66 in the second round.
Evansville will take to the course next week, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. to participate in the Don Benbow Intercollegiate at the Jacksonville Beach Club.
