Evansville Wraps Up IU Invitational In Fifth

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –
Evansville senior Griffin Wood capped off the IU Invitational with a 1-over 71 on his way to a tie for fifth place as the Purple Aces men’s golf team duplicated that effort, taking fifth at the IU Invitational on Sunday.
 
Wood finished the tournament with a 211, seven strokes off of the lead.  Quinn Vilneff put forth a three-round effort of 215 on his way to a tie for 15th.  Vilneff shot the top round of Saturday’s opening round, carding a 3-under 68.
 
Senior Michael Sainz had the low round for UE on Sunday as his even 71 gave him a 219 to tie for 30th while Parker Hensley was two shots behind with a 221.  The Aces were rounded out by Andrew Luo, who notched a 228.  Sam Cobb notched a 242 shooting as an individual.
 
Northwestern finished off its dominant effort in the event, taking the team and individual honors.  The Wildcats tied for the lowest team round on Sunday, notching a 283 on their way to an 841.  That was 11 strokes ahead of IUPUI, who came in second just in front of Indiana’s 853.  Detroit Mercy was fourth with an 861 while Evansville shot an 867.
 
Eric Chun of Northwestern blistered the competition, shooting a 9-under 204 to take medalist honors by two over Ben Engle of IUPUI.  David Mills of IU was third with a 209.
 
Evansville will stay close to home in two weeks, facing off against USI on April 21.  Quail Crossing will play host to the event.
