Softball Loses Series to Illinois State

UE Softball drops two in doubleheader against Redbirds

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Evansville softball team lost the weekend Missouri Valley Conference series to Illinois State 3-0, dropping two games on Saturday.
 
The first game of the doubleheader saw Illinois State get an 8-2 win over the visiting Aces, and game two was finished in five innings, as the Redbirds won 10-0.
 
The Purple Aces are now 16-28 this season with a 4-15 Valley record, while the Redbirds have improved to 12-5 in conference play and 20-24 overall.
 
Game One
Game one of the Saturday doubleheader saw the Aces fall by a score of 8-2.
 
The Purple Aces started senior Taylor Perry in the circle, and after a scoreless first inning for Evansville, the Redbirds were able to score four in the bottom of the inning. The home team scored on an error and a three run homerun, taking the 4-0 lead.
 
Perry and Baxter kept both offenses in check during the second and third innings and the game stayed 4-0 Redbirds.
 
The top of the fourth saw freshman Chandra Parr hit her second homerun of the series, tying her with Kayla Fortner (9) for most on the team and Michal Luckett hit an RBI single to right field, driving in Courtney Land to cut the Redbirds lead down to 4-2.
 
The bottom of the fourth saw the home team put two more runs on the board, as the Redbirds' Harrison hit an RBI double and Canopy scored on a wild pitch, giving the home team the 6-2 lead heading into the fifth.
 
After the Aces failed to put any runs on the board in the top of the fifth, UE would bring in Briana Combs for Perry. Perry (0-7) finished the day throwing 4.0 innings, striking out one and allowing six runs on three hits receiving the loss for the visiting Aces.
 
Combs gave up an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, as Illinois State took the 7-2 lead heading into the sixth.
 
UE was unable to get any offense going in the top of the sixth and in the bottom half of the inning, Jodran de los Reyes for Illinois State hit a homerun, leading to the 8-2 lead for the Redbirds.
 
The top of the seventh was a scoreless one for the Aces and the home team Illinois State got the 8-2 win.
 
Game Two
The Aces started freshman Danielle Freeman (0-0) in the circle for game two and things did not start out well for the visiting Evansville squad.
 
The bottom of the first saw Illinois State take a four nothing lead, on a Jordan de los Reyes RBI walk, a two run RBI single by Sara Bradley and another RBI walk by Kara Repp. All four of the runs were credited to Freeman, with three of them being earned, before Coach Mark Redburn subbed out the freshman pitcher for Emily Morris. Freeman's day would be done, throwing 0.0 innings, allowing four runs on zero hits.
 
The Redbirds would score another run in the bottom of the third on an RBI ground out by Harrison, taking the 5-0 lead.
 
Regan Romshek for Illinois State kept UE scoreless once again in the top of the fourth and this is where the Redbirds made a run. The bottom half of the inning saw Illinois State hit a two run RBI single, another RBI single, and a two run RBI triple off of the senior Morris, and the home team took the 10-0 win in five innings of play.
 
Morris finished the day allowing six runs on seven hits, with only five of the scores being earned and striking out two in 4.0 innings of work.
 
The Purple Aces will play next on Tuesday at Cooper Stadium, as Evansville will host Southern Illinois in a single mid-week game.
