PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Evansville baseball team (22-18, 6-9) won 10-0 in a mercy rule shortened, seven inning game at Bradley (29-11, 7-5) on Sunday afternoon. Outfielder
Kevin Kaczmarski was 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. His five hits tied a career-high and moved his batting average to .455. Pitcher
Connor Strain (3-4) also took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, earning the complete game shutout in the sweep-preventing victory.
"Strain gave us a great effort, avoiding the big inning and worked around some leadoff walks," said UE head coach
Wes Carroll. "Kaczmarski had a day for the record books with five hits and finishing just a home run shy of the cycle."
Evansville hopped on Bradley early with two first inning runs on a Kaczmarski RBI triple and another single from infielder
Jonathan Ramon. Ahead 2-0, Strain worked around a jam in the bottom of the inning and left two Braves runners on base.
UE extended their lead in the third. A double by Kacmzarski pushed the Aces ahead by three. Ramon's RBI single and a fielding error plated two more runs for the 5-0 cushion.
Up by a handful of runs, Evansville tallied three more runs in the fourth. Kaczmarski's run producing single, Ramon's RBI groundout and a run scoring single from
Eric McKibban moved UE ahead by eight. Two Purple Aces runs in the sixth created a double digit lead.
Bradley designated hitter Elliot Ashbeck broke up Strain's no-hitter with a one out single in the sixth. Strain (3-4 ) yielded just one more hit in the complete game win. He threw 7.0 scoreless innings of two hit, five walk baseball while also striking out four. This was the first career complete game and shutout for Strain.
Ramon finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Outfielder
Josh Jyawook totaled two hits, moving his hitting streak to 18 straight games. Jyawook also had three runs scored, tying a career-high. Outfielder
Jarod Perry was 1-for-4 with two runs scored, advancing his on base streak to 41 consecutive games.
Kaczmarski has now hit safely in 14 games in a row. His first inning triple was the 18
th in his UE career, passing Pat Schulz (1990-1993) for second most in program history. The two doubles for Kaczmarski gave him 61 in his time with Evansville, tying Phil Broshears 1997-2000) for fourth most in Purple Aces history.
Evansville's next game is at home on Tuesday, April 28 against Indiana. First pitch is 6:00 p.m. at Braun Stadium. Adult tickets are $7 as senior/youth tickets are just $5.
