EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team (29-22) rallied from a five run deficit to win 6-5 against the Austin Peay Governors (25-26) on Friday night . The Purple Aces loaded the bases in the ninth inning and a full count hit by pitch to infielder
Jonathan Ramon helped UE secure their first walk-off win of the season.
Â
"I'm proud of our guys," said UE head coach
Wes Carroll. "I thought Ramon had a heck of an at-bat in the ninth to battle off good sliders, apply some pressure and give us a chance to win."
Â
Evansville trailed Austin Peay 5-0 after the Governors scored three runs in the first and two more in the second. Left-hander
Brodie Harkness made the scheduled short start for UE, but yielded three runs in his 2.0 innings pitched.
Â
Trailing by a handful of runs, the Aces rallied back with four scores in the third. Outfielder
Josh Jyawook brought home the first run with an RBI single, and pinch hitter
Tyler Sullivan pulled the Aces within a run on a single to center field later in the frame.
Â
The contest remained a 5-4 game until the bottom of the sixth. Outfielder
Korbin Williams worked a leadoff walk, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly from catcher
Billy Lipari.
Â
Reliever
Patrick Schnieders kept the game tied at five by retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh. Schnieders tossed 5.0 innings, yielding just two runs on three hits and recorded nine consecutive outs to end his night.
Â
Still tied at five, reliever
Jimmy Ward loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Reliever
Conor Gilligan then got back to back strikeouts to end the inning and worked around a ninth inning error to leave another runner at third.
Â
UE then won the game in the ninth, taking advantage of an Austin Peay fielding error and bases loaded hit by pitch to claim the 6-5 victory.
Â
Ramon ended the night 0-for-3, snapping his 13 game hitting streak. Perry also saw his stretch of 12 consecutive games with a hit end following an 0-for-4 game with two runs. Perry has reached base safely in 52 straight games. Sullivan was 2-for-3 off the bench. Infielder
Stewart Nelson also tallied two hits.
Â
Gilligan (3-1) earns the win going 1.2 hitless innings and leaving four on base.
Â
The teams will meet again on Friday, May 15 at Braun Stadium. UE will hold Senior Day festivities honoring
Ryan Billo, Gilligan, Kaczmarski, Perry, and
Matt Rodgers prior to the 6:00 p.m. CDT first pitch. Adult tickets are $7 as senior/youth tickets are just $5.
