CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Chandra Parr posted three hits and four RBIs in the second game of action on Friday to give the Purple Aces softball team a split in the opening day of the Frost Classic.
The University of Evansville fell in a close game to Miami Ohio, 2-1, but rallied back with a 5-inning 11-1 triumph over Chattanooga to wrap up the day. Tomorrow, the Aces continue in the tournament with an 11 a.m. ET game against Lipscomb before the team takes on Northern Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. ET.
"Our pitching staff did an amazing job in both games. They have been able to keep the opposing offenses off balance," UE head coach Mat Mundell said. "We challenged the team in the second game to go out and just battle and they did it. Every girl attached her at-bats. Good things happen when you fight for your pitch."
Evansville's dominating win saw Parr and Danielle Freeman post three hits apiece. Parr drove in four runs while Freeman had two RBIs and scored twice. Morgan Lambert and Hayli Soctt finished with two hits apiece while Tess Hupe scored three runs. The pitching was stellar as Amanda Blankenship earned her second win of the season as the Aces now sit at 9-3. She went three hitless innings. Morgan Florey pitched the final two innings while striking out four.
After scoring once in the top of the first, UE put a five spot on the board in the second. Olivia Cheatham drove in the first two runs with her home run to left field before a Freeman single brought home Michal Luckett. Parr capped off the frame with a 2-run double to center.
Two more runs scored in the top of the fourth while the final three came across in the fifth, allowing UE to earn the 11-1 win in five innings. Lambert and Scott notched RBI hits in the fourth while Freeman, Luckett and Parr drove in runs in the fifth.
Game one was a defensive battle that saw Miami Ohio win by a final of 2-1. The RedHawks jumped on the Aces with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Miami had a pair of RBI hits in the inning that put them on top. Evansville battled back in the bottom half of the inning as Michal Luckett led off with a single. After stealing second, she would score on a wild pitch.
Over the remainder of the game, the Aces would register three more hits, but the two runs scored by the RedHawks held up thank to the pitching of Amber Logemann, who went the distance for MU. Evansville's pitching was also strong as Blankenship went four innings giving up just three hits and the two runs. Emily Lockhart went 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Morgan Florey pitched 1 1/3.
