EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– In a pair of close contests, Drake was able to hang on for a pair of wins over the University of Evansville softball team on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Stadium.

The Bulldogs (11-10, 2-0 MVC) defeated the Purple Aces (11-11, 0-2 MVC) by a 4-2 margin in the first game before hanging on for a 4-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Drake grabbed the advantage in first game, scoring a run in the top of the first before tacking on three more in the fourth.  Tasha Alexander had the big hit for the Bulldogs, lacing a double to right that plated a pair of runs.

Hayli Scott got the Purple Aces on the board in the top of the sixth as she posted a home run to left field to end the shut out.  Evansville added another run later in the inning as Courtney Land hit a triple to left field.  The Aces had the tying run at the plate in the inning, but pitcher Nicole Newman was able to limit the damage.  Newman went the distance in earning her 8th victory of the season.  She gave up five hits and two runs.  Amanda Blankenship took the loss for UE.

Land led the way in the game, recording two of UE's five hits and an RBI triple.

Chandra Parr led game two off with a triple before Michal Luckett brought her home with an infield single to give the Aces a 1-0 lead.  Drake found some two-out magic in the third inning, plating four runs to take their fir lead of the game at 4-1.

Evansville responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame as Parr recorded her second hit of the game.  That brought Luckett up and she responded once again, doubling to center to bring Parr home.  After Danielle Freeman singled up the middle, Luckett scored on a Scott groundout.

As the game headed into the final inning, the Aces had one last run left.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Luckett put forth an admirable at-bat, fouling off several pitches before driving one to left field.  That brought Freeman to the plate.  She drove a pitch to deep center field, but it came within a foot of going out as Drake was able to finish off the win.

Luckett posted three hits in game two while Parr recorded two.  The pair combined to score all of UE's three runs.  Nicole Newman picked up her second win of the day as she entered in the third inning and pitched the final 4 1/3, giving up just one hit.  Samantha Fleming went 2 2/3 and took the loss for UE.

A trip to Lawrence, Kan. is up next for UE as they will play Kansas in a doubleheader on Tuesday.  Game one is set for 11 a.m. with the second to follow.
