The University of Evansville baseball team's commitment in the classroom was honored on Tuesday as the team was named an inaugural recipient of the Academic Excellence Award, which will be presented annually by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Â
"It's great that the ABCA has created an award to bring attention to the teams around the country that perform well academically," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "We pride ourselves in competing not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. Awards like this show what we have here, and that's a team of future leaders."
Â
The Purple Aces, which capped the season with a pair of wins at the MVC Championship, finished the 2015-16 school year with a 3.17 grade-point-average.
Â
UE was one of just two Missouri Valley Conference schools honored, joining Illinois State
Â
In all, 29 programs in NCAA Division I were presented with the award, with UE and Ball State serving as the lone Indiana representation on the list. In order for a program to qualify for the designation, which is presented to teams from the high school, junior college and college ranks, a program must maintain a 3.00 GPA over the course of an academic year.
