Second-half run falls short for Aces in loss to SIUE

Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Coming back from a 15-point deficit at halftime, the University of Evansville women's basketball team saw it's second-half run come up just short in a 54-45 loss to SIUE on Wednesday night inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Pacing the Purple Aces were redshirt senior Brooke Bishop and freshman Tayzha Buck, who each tallied nine points on the evening. Of Buck's nine points, six came in the midst of 10-3 Evansville run in the third quarter that saw the Aces trim the Cougars' advantage to just eight.

After SIUE took a 4-0 lead out of the game, Evansville stormed back with a 10-2 run to open up a four-point lead over SIUE with 3:56 left in the first quarter. Evansville held a 12-9 advantage following the opening period, but the Cougars took control of the second quarter, out-scoring UE, 27-9 in the second frame to take a 36-21 lead to the break.

In the third quarter, SIUE maintained a 14-point lead through the first two minutes of the half before the Aces mounted a run. The aforementioned 10-3 advantage that pushed Evansville withing eight included a pair of three's by Buck as the Cougars' lead was just 40-32 with under five minutes remaining in the quarter. Following the third period, SIUE's advantage was just nine at 46-37. Both teams struggled to get their offenses going again in the fourth quarter, as each side scored just eight points in the final 10 minutes. Evansville continued to draw closer, though, as the Aces pushed within six on a steal and layup by freshman A'Niah Griffin at 48-42. Over the next 2:59 seconds, neither side scored, until SIUE hit a three-pointer with 50 seconds left to increase its lead back to nine as the Cougars finished with a 54-45 win.

Other notables on the night included an eight point, four rebound, four assist, and two steal performance from freshman Makayla Wallace and four points, nine board, and three blocks for junior Kaylan Coffman. Coming off the bench, freshman A'Niah Griffin impressed with five points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block in 13 minutes on the court. As a team, both Evansville and SIUE struggled shooting wise, as the Cougars narrowly edged the Aces, 32.6% to 31.8%, from the field.

Evansville returns to Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Tuesday, November 20 for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Purdue Fort Wayne.
