Aces softball drops home finale to Salukis

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Southern Illinois plated four runs in the first inning and never trailed from there, earning an 8-5 win over the University of Evansville softball team in Sunday's home finale at Cooper Stadium.

UE (14-32, 7-16 MVC) recorded six hits on the day with Eryn Gould going 2-3 to lead the way.  Lindsay Renneisen and McKenzie Johnson posted two RBI apiece.  Leading the Salukis (27-20, 10-11 MVC) were Maris Boelens and Maddy Vermejan with two hits apiece.  Sydney Jones had three runs batted in.
Final Stats
Back-to-back hits led the game off for the Salukis before they loaded the bases with one out.  Sydney Jones got SIU on the board with a 2-RBI double before another big hit by SIU extended their lead to 4-0.

Evansville came to the plate in the bottom of the frame and posted a run on three hits with Brittany Hay hitting a single to left field to score Morgan Florey, who also singled earlier in the inning.

Southern Illinois roared right back with a run in the second and two more in the third thanks to a 2-run home run by Kyleigh Decker and pushed their lead to seven runs at 8-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Aces put runners on second and third with no outs.  McKenzie Johnson came to the plate with two outs and delivered a hit to left that plated Olivia Cheatham and Elyse Hickey to make it an 8-3 game.

Renneisen got the Aces closer in the bottom half of the seventh, launching her seventh homer of the season to score two runs, but that would be as close as the Aces would get with SIU clinching the 8-5 victory.  Jaime Nurrenbern made the start for UE before Ashleigh Downing threw the final 5 2/3 frames.  Each struck out one batter.  Brianna Jones went the distance for SIU, earning her 22nd win of the season.

The regular season comes to an end next weekend when the Aces travel to Peoria, Ill. for a 3-game set against Bradley.
