CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Evansville swimming squad displayed a strong return in 2019 with a pair of wins over Eastern Illinois Wednesday night.
The women scored 199.5 to the Panthers' 62.5, while the men took the win with a score of 160 to 101.
"We were able to learn as a team and get the year started with some solid racing," said head coach Brent Noble. " We've been training hard and it's really nice to get back into racing. We did some things really well, and we have some things to work on. We have plenty of time to do that."
The women's team performed strongly, winning every single event.
The 200 Medley Relay team of senior Sam Gowdy, junior Alaina Sylvester, senior Kristen Myers, and junior Emma Hennessy clocked a 1:50.05 for the top spot, while the B-Relay of junior Kristy Kupfer, senior Kaylee Gubricky, sophomore Kara Steward, and freshman Pearl Muensterman took 2
nd with 1:53.88.
Junior Ashton Adams won the first individual event. Her 1000 freestyle performance resulted in a final time of 10:50.18, while sophomore Emily Lane took the runner up spot with a 11:12.55.
Senior Madi Jones grabbed the next win in the 200 freestyle, clocking in a 1:56.93. Freshman Nicolette Wickes snuck into 2
nd place by a hundredth of a second with a time of 2:02.05. Jones also won the 100 freestyle with a final time of 54.64, with freshman Jessie Steele taking runner up in a 54.83.
Gowdy and Hennessy kept their winning momentum up in the 100 backstroke, taking 1
st and 2
nd with times of 59.15 and 1:01.69 respectively. Gowdy went on to win the 200 as well, clocking a 2:08.39, with Kupfer following in 2
nd with a 2:09.42.
Sylvester took her turn on the individual podium as well, her 1:09.66 100 breaststroke taking the win. Sophomore Sarah Alexander and senior Sylvia McFadden completed the sweep with 1:12.39 and 1:13.63 respectively. Sylvester led another breaststroke sweep in the 200, finishing in a 2:31.63. Gubricky and McFadden clocked 2:36.63 and 2:38.96 respectively.
Myers and Steward continued their run to place 1
st and 2
nd in the 200 butterfly, clocking in a 2:08.16 and 2:11.10. Gubricky won the 50 freestyle with a 25.26. Steward then finished the 100 butterfly in a 59.88 for first place.
Freshman Emily Vasquez took the win in the 500 freestyle with a final time of 5:22.71, followed by senior Megan Schremp in 2
nd with 5:27.64.
The women finished the night with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Muensterman, Steele, Gubricky, and Hennessy teamed up to clock in a 1:41.12, while the B-Relay of Gowdy, Kupfer, Vasquez, and Jones came shortly in 2
nd with a 1:42.44.
Freshman David Killian took the first victory for the men, clocking a 10:03.09 in the 1000 freestyle. Fellow freshman Ee Tan and junior Samad Abu-Shanab completed the sweep with 10:16.00 and 10:19.62 respectively.
Freshman Oskar Menkhaus led another sweep, this time in the 200 freestyle. He clocked a 1:44.29, and was quickly followed by junior Brandt Hudson at a 1:44.89. Sophomore Austin Smith took 3
rd with a 1:45.05. Hudson later took his own victory with a 1:57.64 finish in the 200 backstroke.
Menkhaus also led the sweep of the 500 freestyle, finishing in a 4:49.68. He was joined by Smith and sophomore Pete Lingo at 4:53.20 and 4:59.82 respectively.
Sophomore Credence Pattinson took the win in both the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly, finishing in 52.13 and 51.93 respectively.
Sophomore Eli James took a solid victory in the 100 breaststroke, his time of 59.11 two seconds ahead of 2
nd place. He also won the 200 breaststroke by nearly 5 seconds with a 2:13.69.
Sophomore Ryan Wood took the next win for the men with a 2:00.66 in the 200 butterfly. Junior Zack Sagan came runner up with 2:01.71.
Junior Paul Cozzens took the final win for the men in the 400 IM with a final time of 4:16.41.
The women return to the pool with a road meet at Illinois State on January 25
th, and then back to Wyttenbach pool to take on Saint Louis with the men's squad on the 26
th for Senior Day.
