Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After trailing by 20 at the break, the University of Evansville women's basketball team battled back into the game, but came up just short in a 72-61 loss to Illinois State on Sunday afternoon inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
For the second-straight game, senior Kerri Gasper led Evansville, scoring 17 points and recording eight rebounds. Also finishing in double-figures for the Aces were freshman Makayla Wallace with 13 points and senior Marley Miller, who finished with 12 points. Leading the way for the Redbirds, TeTe Maggett recorded 26 points, six assists, and four rebounds, while Simone Goods also scored in double-digits with 16 points.

To open the game, Illinois State grabbed the early lead, pushing out to a 10-2 advantage with 7:42 left in the first quarter. Evansville bounced back, getting within four at 16-12 before the Redbirds closed the period on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead into the second quarter. In the second frame, Illinois State built its lead to 22 at 37-15 and maintained the advantage, holding a 20-point 48-28 lead at the break.
The Aces provided a strong battle in the second half, beginning with a push in the third quarter. Getting off to a fast start in the period, Evansville trimmed the Redbirds' lead down to 14 midway through the period, trailing 55-41 with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. After Goods hit a layup with 3:07 left on the clock in the third, both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the quarter as Illinois State owned a 57-41 lead heading into the final period. Evansville mounted an impressive rally in the fourth quarter as the Aces pushed within eight twice and trailed just 64-56 with 3:42 left in the game. After the Aces moved withing eight, Illinois State responded with a 6-0 run for a 14-point lead as the Redbirds held on late for the 72-61 win.
Evansville is back in action on Friday, January 18 as the Aces begin a two-game northern road swing with a matchup with Loyola at 3:00 p.m. in Chicago, Ill..
