Three finish in double-figures as Aces fall to hot-shooting Redbirds

1/9/2022 2:48:00 PM

Box Score EVANSVILLE - Despite a ferocious comeback in the second quarter, the University of Evansville women's basketball team dropped its weekend-ending matchup with Illinois State, 87-68, on Sunday afternoon inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse in Evansville.

The Aces were led by three in double-figures as junior Abby Feit, freshman Kodie Myszka, and senior Myia Clark all reached the 10-point mark on the afternoon. Feit finished with a team-high 17 points, hitting a pair of threes and grabbing five rebounds. Myszka recorded a new career-high on the day, scoring 12 points, including eight in the first quarter, on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting performances. For the second-straight game, Clark reached the double-digit mark, scoring 11 against the Redbirds, including six at the charity stripe. Illinois State was led by a pair of 20+ point scorers in Mary Crompton (22 points) and DeAnna Wilson (21).

From the outset, the contest was played at a fast pace, a quality that would seem to suit the Aces well as both teams poured-in the points early. After the Redbirds missed their first three shots, Illinois State found its rhythm, knocking-down six straight to take a 14-6 lead near the midway point of the first quarter. Evansville would continue to score right with Illinois State for much of the first period, holding its deficit at seven at 24-17.

Evansville flipped the script on the Redbirds in quarter two, finding its offense, especially from beyond the arc. A 10-point advantage at 30-20 with 6:27 left in the half would be as large as Illinois State could build its lead before the Aces mounted a run. A three by redshirt sophomore Celine Dupont sparked the Evansville run and a layup and foul by Feit with 1:09 left in the period proved as a highlight of the spree as the Normal, Illinois natives' shot and subsequent free-throw put the Aces in front, 36-34. Before the half was through, Evansville's pressure continued to cause problems, generating another turnover to help get a stop to close the half as the Aces closed the quarter on a 19-4 run, giving UE the 39-34 lead at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, Illinois State looked to answer right back and retake the lead, doing so just shy of the five-minute mark in the third quarter on a triple by Mary Crompton that started a string of three-straight made threes by Crompton, giving the Redbirds a 54-50 lead, an advantage they would never relinquish. As Evansville continued to try and push back, efficiency proved to be the key as Illinois State shot 19-30 (63.3%) from the field in the second half en route to an 87-68 win.

The Aces return to the court on Thursday with a trip to Terre Haute, Ind. to take on Indiana State at 5 PM (CT).
