UE track and field dominates the men's mile at the UAB Vulcan Invite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Evansville track and field team returned to action after a two week break in the Yellowhammer State.

The Purple Aces took two of the top three spots in the men's mile at the UAB Vulcan Invite on Friday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex. UE also earned a podium finish in the men's 200-meter race while nine athletes set new personal records. Evansville sophomore Rafael Rodriguez (Segovia, Spain) broke his own program record in the men's mile with his first-place finish at 4:13.26.

"In the first of two meets this weekend, we were able to bring forth some big personal bests," said Head Coach Dylan Anderson. "We turn around really quickly in the morning for another meet, which is great conference championship preparation."

SPRINTS & HURDLES
UE sprinters began their day with the men's 60-meters as sophomores Raymond Felton III (Houston / Clear Brook HS) and Connor Shin (Bloomington, Ind. / Bloomington North HS) and freshman Myles Terry (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) competed in the event. Felton and Terry finished back-to-back in their heat with times of 6.94 and 7.16 seconds. Shin placed fourth in his heat with a time of 7.14 seconds.

Evansville's women had the first crack at the 400-meter race on Friday. Sophomore Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) had the fastest finish at 58.43 seconds to finish second in her heat. Freshman Clara Kelty (Louisville, Ky. / Presentation Academy) ran in the same heat as Johnson with a time of 1:07.70. Rounding out the women was senior Kaitlyn Sansone (Fairfield, Ohio / Mercy McAuley HS) in her first race in two and a half years. Sansone finished the 400-meter race in 1:15.60.

In the men's 400-meter race Terry had the fastest time at 50.38 seconds for a Top 25 finish. Junior José Ocampo (Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico) had the Aces second best time at 53.14. While freshman Zander Pickens (Poseyville, Ind. / North Posey HS) set a PR in the 400 with a time of 54.73 seconds.

UE's sprinters finished Friday's meet with the 200-meter dash. Johnson was Evansville's only runner in the women's 200 where she finished 20th in 25.33 seconds. In the men's race Felton earned a podium finish at 21.69 seconds for third place. Shin finished two tenths of a second behind his personal best with a 22.89 second finish. And Ocampo was the Aces final sprinter at 23.43 seconds.
Junior hurdler Kate Walke (Batesville, Ind. / Oldenburg Academy) was UE's only entry in the hurdle competitions. Walke finished second in her heat with a time of 9.30 tying her personal best on the year for Evansville.

MID-DISTANCE & DISTANCE
The Aces competed in three distance events starting with the women and men's mile race. In the women's mile sophomore Kyndall Anthis (Pakota, Ind. / Princeton Community HS) set a PR with a time of 5:33.19 to finish second in her heat. She was followed by freshmen Laura Bradley (Russiaville, Ind. / Western HS) with a time of 5:43.54 and Skyler Dickenson (Brownsburg, Ind. / Brownsburg HS) with a time of 5:48.35.

UE almost swept the men's mile with all three of the teams' runners coming in the top five. Sophomores Rafael Rodriguez (Segovia, Spain) and Tomasso Losma (Lombardia, Italy) set PRs to take first and second with times of 4:13.26 and 4:17.00. Senior Adam Oulgout (St. Paul, Minn. / Central HS) rounded out the race finishing fifth with a time of 4:22.06.

Evansville's mid-distance runners then took the track with the 800-meter races. Sophomore Chase Hayes (Noblesville, Ind. / Western HS) set a PR with a time of 2:27.07 and 13th place for the Aces best finish in the women's race. Senior Hannah Bryan (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) also had a PR in the 800 with a time of 2:32.58. Rounding out the women's 800 was freshman Bekah Sachs (Milwaukee / Milwaukee School of Languages) with a time of 2:44.12.

Two UE runners set PRs in the men's 800 race as sophomore Jakub Nowicki (Poznan, Poland) placed seventh with a time of 1:55.85. While freshman Kadin McAllister (Lilburn, Ga. / Parkview HS) had his best race of the season at 1:59.96. All three of Evansville's runners in the men's 800 finished in the Top 25 as sophomore Owen Cuplin (Hampshire, Ill. / Hampshire HS) placed 22nd with a time of 1:59.78.

In the women's 3K race sophomore Avery Stephens (Newburg, Ind. / Castle HS) finished with a time of 10:45.95 to be only five seconds behind her season best. In the men's 3K race sophomore Samuel Lea (Worchester, England) placed 13th with a time of 8:41.70. While freshman Andrew Potter (Warsaw, Ind. / Warsaw Community HS) and sophomore Woody Burrell (Cedarburg, Wis. / Cedarburg HS) had a photo finish. Potter just barely took the edge at 9:11.06 while Burrell finished in 9:11.07.

JUMPS
Senior Antuwaun Powell (Ringgold, Ga. / Heritage HS) competed in only his second long jump competition of the season for the Aces. Powell finished with a jump of 5.78 meters to place 24th in the field.

THROWS
UE's throwers began the day in Birmingham with the men's shot put at 9 a.m. Freshman Beau Baldwin (Mt. Vernon HS) had the longest throw for Evansville at 10.49 meters while freshman Jack Hawkins threw for 8.64 meters. In the women's shot put freshman Emma Bertel (Franklin, Ind. / Franklin Community HS) threw 10.23 meters. Junior Holland Morris (Florence, Ky. / Randall K. Cooper HS) also competed in the women's shot put for her first event with Aces track & field. Morris threw for 8.19 meters in her field debut.

Throwers ended the day with the weight throw where Baldwin threw for a PR 11.95 meters. Sophomore Tyler Cherne (Boardman, Ohio / Boardman HS) had the furthest throw of the day for UE at 14.09 meters. In the women's weight throw junior Gwen Darrah (Cleveland, Ohio / Orange HS) threw for 13.26 meters while senior Kate Howard (Clarksville, Tenn. / Clarksville HS) best throw was 6.69 meters.

UP NEXT
Evansville remains in Birmingham for a second meet hosted by UAB this weekend. The Aces will compete in the UAB Green and Gold Invite on Saturday, February 8. Competition for UE will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put from the Crossplex.
