EVANSVILLE, Ind. - In its final exhibition contest of the season, the University of Evansville women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
"There's still some scary moments and some things we have to do better at, but I think overall we saw improvement from, one, our practices, but, two, our last game and that's what we are looking for; daily improvement," said Aces head women's soccer coach Krista McKendree. "We wanted to see a bounce back from the last game and that's kind of what we had talked to them about is no matter what the last performance is we want it to be better the next time and I think that's something we definitely did."
Evansville saw its first chance of the match arise in the 19th minute as Sierra Pagan had her shot saved. With the half coming to a close, the Purple Aces found their breakthrough in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Emily Olson played a ball that freshman Alex Eyler found just inside the 18-yard box. Eyler used a couple touches to gain distance between her and her defender and neatly placed the ball in the back of the net to give UE the 1-0 advantage at the break.
The second half featured many more chances for Evansville as the Aces out-shot EIU, 11-1, in the second frame, including a 2-0 advantage on shots-on-goal. Despite the advantage in shots, the Aces were unable to add a second tally in the final 45 minutes, but freshman Michaela Till preserved the result for UE with a clean sheet.
"It means a lot to come out here and show up for the team and put it in the back of the net," remarked Eyler on her first collegiate goal.
Freshman Emily Ormson led the way for Evansville with four shots on the evening, including one that nearly found goal, but instead ricocheted off the cross bar and out. Till's outing between the posts included facing a pair of Panther shots.
The Aces open the regular season on Thursday when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to face SEMO at 6:30 p.m..
